Reflecting on roads traveled and steps taken, I found myself in uncharted waters. I sought out those wiser than me, but it seemed their opinions pushed against what I felt was the right path. It made me question my decisions and, in some cases, make the wrong ones. “But that’s how the world works, it is what it is.” Not good enough. If a million people can agree on the same idea, it still doesn’t make it right. Multitudes of Israelites thought Moses abandoned them and turned back to their old idols, certainly not right. I, myself have witnessed a few golden calves hoisted up lately, but God has allowed me to see them for what they truly are.
When faced with questions of regarding my choices, I feigned excuses instead of speaking the truth. The Lord’s words were clear, “Couldn’t I produce a multitude of miracles with the wave of my hand? Then why are you struggling to fight these battles? Have faith, believe and be patient.”
A man who is born again does not use the world’s opinion as his standard of right and wrong. J.C.Ryle
Not the world’s standard, but God’s standard.
A standard bearer is one who carries the flag or colors of his country or his king. Positioned at the front, he leads the army, guiding its charge. However, he also becomes the primary target for opponents who would seek to strike down the standard. It was a dangerous but honorable position.
With the Lord’s standard, the carriers stand fearlessly and take the brunt of the attack. I should carry the banner more and follow behind less. Nevertheless, I struggle to live up to God’s standard, let alone carry it. It is a noble goal but unachievable on my own.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Cor 12:9
The Lord draws me toward His standard, but only by His immeasurable Grace could I even come close. Jesus carried the banner; His precious blood was the colors, and He took the brunt of the attack so I may know where and how to follow.
Grateful that He is the true standard bearer.
