Count the Cost

AddingMuch of my time is spent compiling feasibility studies, a fancy phrase for just a budget. Sadly, more often than not, it is a fruitless endeavor. Even if a project is deemed feasible, the client usually requires multiple proposals to make sure he has the best price. So if my efforts yield any fruit at all, it is a “thank you” from the client and a seat at the table to compete for the project. Though I try to be more strategic with my time, client relationships have great value and I can’t fault the client for asking for help with his due diligence. It is biblical after all.

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’” Luke 14:28-30

This parable is about counting the cost, but Jesus told the story as it relates to the cost of following Him. It is much more than hanging around just to see magic tricks and get free food. No, it could cost your family, relationships, all that you have, and even your life. If someone handed you the keys to a mansion, you would have to leave your old house to accept the new. Similarly, you have leave behind your old ways to embrace the new. There are costs.

Following Jesus is not always easy. It has been my experience that the closer I get to Him, the stronger the temptations become. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, the temptations grew in size, first bread, then testing God’s protection, then an offer of the whole world. It is said that if you are not being tempted, then you are not enough of a threat to evil. So consider temptation proof that you are moving in the right direction and evil wants to derail you.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4

So what is the cost? Have you faced difficulty as a result of turning away from the wrong path; or standing up for what is right; or expressing your faith? Jesus said you must count the cost of following Him and the cost could be great. But the cost of not following Him is an eternal debt that will never be satisfied.

Which one can you afford?

I pray that you and I would take up our crosses if need be and follow Jesus.
And be Blessed in Great Measure.
