Incessant Prayer

Prayer3Incessant – continuing without pause or interruption, often regarded as something unpleasant. Unpleasant? Not Always.

I awoke with my mind full struggles that troubled my sleep. Thoughts of what needed to be done and what may not get done, bills that had to be paid and some that may not be so lucky. I spent some quiet time considering prayer without ceasing.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Continually, without pause or interruption, incessantly. God-conversations are a good thing when you can carve a few minutes out of your day. But what about when life comes at you?

We are experts of the multitask, write with one hand and juggle with the other while carrying on a separate conversation. Perhaps we should use those skills in our prayer life as well. In every situation, keep an ongoing conversation with God. As you talk to others, keep asking God what He wants you to say, how can you further His kingdom in this very moment by your words or actions?

I took a walk this morning with the dog at my heals. The skies were foggy and the warm air stood still as if waiting for something to break the silence. Consumed by worry, I approached God with a bruised heart seeking His direction. He said, “Lift your eyes and breathe deep.” As I did, I saw a brilliant sunrise peering through the haze, remnants of morning mist sparkling on the leaves. A peaceful pause and signs of spring all around, my eyes were filled with the beauty I had ignored a few minutes earlier.

As my focus was broken by barrage of messages from colleagues who thought they needed my immediate help, I figured they could wait and let me finish my morning walk with God. Then my phone rang from a friend who had passed away a few years back. It shocked me to see his name on the phone, even though I knew his number had been transferred to someone else, I just hadn’t changed my contact info yet. But there was no one on the other end. Kind of a heavenly jab that maybe I was on to something.

Pray continually. Don’t let the conversation end with “Amen”. Lift your eyes and breathe deep. Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Amen ….

Be Blessed in Great Measure
