Surviving the Inbetween

I prayed for sleep, but sleep would not come.

A late night call sent my head spinning.

Praying for miracles did not dispel my worries, but it was all I could do from this far away. Honestly, it’s probably all I could if I was sitting there, too.

Father, I thank You for hearing me.
I know You always hear me,
But the waiting is hard.

As exhaustion dragged my eyes closed, there was a rustling in the room. A loved one was up and I had to make sure he didn’t fall until he was safely back in bed.

With no phone connection from so far away, I stared at the glow of an empty screen.

There would be no sleep tonight.

I prayed again for miracles.
It’s all I know to do.

Yet before the words left my lips, another call.
Things were stable, but only by the Hand of God.

Before a word is on my tongue, Lord, You know it completely. Psalm 139:4

We talked for the better part of an hour, about everything and nothing, just to fill the space.

Sleep was not important, mine, anyway.

My doctor had asked how I was.

“I’d be fine if I could just get everyone else healthy.”

She said, “You need to take care of you.”

I’ll get to it one of these days.

It seems I’m just surviving the in-between.

Now, I’m sure there is much more that I don’t see.

Jesus said, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now.” John 16:12

And I am grateful, Lord.
I am grateful.

We pray for daily bread, and daily bread is given.
Just enough to get by.

But I would not complain if there was a little extra in my basket today.

If just a few more minutes to sleep.
