Veil of Fire by Marlo Schalesky

Scanning thrift store bookshelves, there are certain favorite authors I seek. More often than not, I find them by way of a title catching my attention. Veil of Fire is such a story.

The premise of a horrific fire, a scorched child of God and the journey to finding truth and restoring faith intrigued me. Finding a bookmark three-quarters the way through concerned me, as if someone had given up on the story. Now I feel sorry for the one who didn’t make it to the end.

The liner notes spoke of rich words and vivid images and did not disappoint. As with the story line, I was consumed with the depth of the characters and their struggles.

An internal narrative of an unnamed character appears throughout the story begging the reader to uncover their identity. The contrast between destruction and restoration, fear and redemption kept me longing to turn another page.

Brilliant storytelling across a canvas of lyrical colors raised the bar for what my own writing should achieve. I look forward to finding more writings of Marlo Schalesky. I recommend you do the same.
